Watching the Zebras
With February in the books, there’s less than a month of conference play left in the season, so the next update will be after the national tournament and will be the big one with the individual posts for each referee and school.
Some notes of interest this month:
Now without further blathering, this month’s stats:
Everyone is back from break, and most of the mid-season tournaments are over (other than the Beanpot), so we’re now starting the meat of the conference schedule.
Kevin McManus has made his first appearance as a Hockey East referee, in a non-conference game between Vermont and Stonehill.
Meanwhile, the weekend of January 16-18 had the largest number of major/misconduct/DQ penalties since opening weekend, with seven – highlighted by the pair of Game Disqualification penalties for the fight between BU’s Sacha Boisvert and UML’s Connor Eddy on Friday night.
Without further ado, here’s the year-to-date statistics for the conference’s referees, including all games played through January 31st.
Apologies for the slight delay in getting this month posted; holiday post-travel illness caught us out a bit.
We’re wrapping up the holiday break, mid-season tournament season is coming to a close, and the conference schedule gauntlet is coming up for everyone, so let’s get the update for the season through the end of December underway.
We had our first zero-penalty game of the season with Vermont at Boston University on December 6th, and Northeastern said farewell to Matthews Arena on December 13th, so the remainder of their season will be either away or neutral site games.
The season is now in full swing, and the conference schedule has started as well. Jason Williams has now made his first appearance for Hockey East at the BC-UVM weekend in Burlington, leaving five 24-25 officials without a Hockey East appearance.
This month’s tables include all games played through November 30, 2025.
Thirteen incidents on the list this month, highlighted by a pair of Game Disqualifications and one game with three Misconducts.
Hockey is back! And with it, we start tracking the Hockey East referees anew, so welcome back for our fourth season of statistics.
Through the end of October, we’ve seen seventeen referees take the ice as a Hockey East representative. Three are new this season: Sam Heidemann, Austin O’Rourke, and Evan Reddick.
From last season, six referees have not yet made a Hockey East appearance in 2025-26: Dmitrii Antipin, Scott Hansen, Kevin McManus, Andy O’Brien, Casey Terreri, and Jason Williams.
The table includes all games through October 31st. With so few conference games being played so far, we’ll skip that table for this month and start including it with the November update as usual.
There’s been a significant uptick in the number of 2+10 penalties being given out this season – 13 have already been called, after only 12 were called last season. Northeastern-Holy Cross on 10/4 leads for most in a game, with six.
Meanwhile, only 4 major penalties have been called so far this season, and no more than one in a game.
The season is racing towards its conclusion, and this is the last month of only regular season games. The next posts will be the end-of-season batch of individual teams and referees.
There was one referee making his Men’s Hockey East debut for the season this month: Andy O’Brien, welcome to the list.
Here’s the year-to-date stats for all games played through February 28, 2025:
And for conference games only:
And the monthly list of all major and misconduct penalties called during the month. We got our first Game Disqualification penalty of the season (Northeastern’s Cristophe Tellier vs. BU), and our first two bench Game Misconducts (both by Northeastern, against UML and BU).
